Research Peptide Storage & Handling: A Lab Reference

Lyophilized (dry) material
Freeze-dried peptide powder is the most stable form. Kept dry, sealed, cold, and away from light, many lyophilized research peptides remain stable for extended periods. Short holds are commonly kept refrigerated; longer storage is typically colder. Always let a cold vial return to room temperature before opening it, so condensation doesn't form inside.
Reconstituted (in solution)
Once dissolved, a peptide is far less stable and its usable life shortens considerably. Reconstituted research solutions are generally:
- Kept refrigerated at 2–8°C for short-term work.
- Protected from light — amber vials or foil help.
- Not repeatedly frozen and thawed; each freeze-thaw cycle degrades peptide in solution.
The three enemies: heat, light, moisture
Heat accelerates breakdown, ultraviolet light can cleave sensitive residues, and moisture invites both hydrolysis and microbial growth. Minimizing exposure to all three is the single most useful habit for keeping research material intact.
Label everything
Label each vial with its contents, the diluent and concentration used, and the reconstitution date. A working solution with no date is a working solution you can no longer trust. Good labeling is what makes storage decisions repeatable across a project.
